Reading the autonomic nervous system through the skin

ANS Monitor is an interface demonstration that visualizes how the autonomic nervous system regulates the body. It renders a simulated electrodermal signal and translates it into the metrics clinicians and researchers use to study arousal and recovery.

Acquire skin conductance

Electrodermal activity (EDA), also called galvanic skin response (GSR), measures tiny changes in the skin's electrical conductance caused by eccrine sweat-gland activity.

Separate tonic and phasic

The slow-moving tonic level (SCL) reflects baseline arousal, while fast phasic skin conductance responses (SCRs) mark discrete reactions to stimuli.

Estimate autonomic branches

Sweat glands are innervated almost exclusively by the sympathetic branch, so EDA is a direct index of sympathetic arousal. Parasympathetic tone is inferred from recovery dynamics.

Compute a balance index

The relationship between arousal and recovery is condensed into a single balance index, making the tilt between fight-or-flight and rest-and-digest easy to read.
